The orthodox view is clean, mechanical, and comforting. The laws of physics are eternal. The constants are constant. A hydrogen atom today behaves exactly as it did a billion years ago because it is following a rule written into the fabric of reality.
But what if the rule is not a rule? What if it is a habit?
This is the proposition of British biologist Rupert Sheldrake. His theory of morphic resonancesuggests that nature is not governed by immutable laws but by a kind of collective memory that accumulates with repetition. The more often a particular form or behavior occurs, the easier it becomes for subsequent systems to replicate it—not through physical causation, but through a non-local, non-energetic connection across space and time.
It is a theory that has been called pseudoscience, defended by parapsychologists, and dismissed by the scientific mainstream. It is also a theory that refuses to die.
Let’s dissect the ghost in the machine of nature.
1. The Origin: A Biochemist’s Crisis
Sheldrake is not a crank. He holds a PhD in biochemistry from Cambridge, conducted research at Harvard, and was a fellow of the Royal Society. His training was orthodox. But his conclusions were not.
The crisis emerged from a fundamental puzzle in biology. Why do organisms develop into their characteristic forms? Why does a frog egg always become a frog, not a fish? Standard genetics could not fully account for the shaping—the morphogenesis—of living systems.
Sheldrake proposed that biological development is guided by morphogenetic fields, which are shaped by the forms of all previous members of that species. A wolf pup develops into a wolf not because it is following a blueprint in its DNA, but because the habit of being a wolf has been reinforced by countless wolves that came before.
This was heresy. And the heresy was about to get weirder.
2. The Core Mechanism: Resonance Across Time
The key term is morphic resonance. It is the process by which the forms, behaviors, and patterns of past systems influence present and future systems of the same kind. The mechanism is not physical. It does not involve the transfer of energy. It is a similarity-based, non-local connection across time—a kind of action at a temporal distance.
Here is the implication. When a rat learns a new maze in a laboratory in London, that learning becomes part of the collective memory of rat-kind. Rats elsewhere, even genetically unrelated rats, will learn the same maze more quickly because they can “tune into” that accumulated memory through morphic resonance.
Sheldrake extends this principle to all of nature. The laws of physics are not fixed. They are habitsthat have become stable over cosmic time. The speed of light is not a decree. It is a habit that has been reinforced by every photon that has ever traveled. If the universe is young, the “laws” may still be evolving.
3. The Evidence: Rats, Chinese Characters, and the Staring Effect
Sheldrake has proposed experiments to test his theory. The most famous involves the maze-learning rats. He compiled data suggesting that the more rats learned a particular maze, the faster subsequent rats learned it, regardless of genetic relatedness.
More rigorous attempts to replicate these findings using word-based stimuli in a laboratory have produced some positive but ambiguous results. In one peer-reviewed study, participants were able to recognize genuine Chinese characters at a rate significantly greater than chance, consistent with the predictions of morphic resonance. However, the authors of the study themselves warned that the theory remains “too poorly specified to rule out some artifactual causes”.
Sheldrake has also extended his theory to human phenomena. He has conducted experiments on telepathy, the sense of being stared at, and the ability of dogs to “know” when their owners are returning home. These studies have been subjected to meta-analyses, but the results remain deeply contested.
The critical point is this: for the mainstream scientific community, the evidence is insufficient. The phenomenon is not replicable under stringent conditions, and the proposed mechanism violates the fundamental principles of physics.

In 1981, the then-editor of the prestigious journal Nature, Sir John Maddox, reviewed Sheldrake’s book A New Science of Life. His verdict was savage: the book was “the best candidate for burning there has been for many years”.
This was not merely professional disagreement. It was a declaration of war. Maddox and the scientific establishment argued that morphic resonance is not a scientific theory at all. It is pseudoscience—a collection of claims that are unfalsifiable, lack empirical support, and contradict established knowledge in genetics, embryology, neuroscience, and biochemistry.
The objections are specific and devastating:
- No known mechanism. Physics has no category for a non-energetic, non-local transfer of information across time. It violates causality as we understand it.
- Redundancy with standard biology. The development of biological form is increasingly well explained by genetics, epigenetics, and biochemistry. The hypothesis of morphic fields is unnecessary.
- Failure to replicate. The positive results reported by Sheldrake have not been consistently reproduced in independent, high-quality laboratories.
5. The Appeal: Why It Persists
If the theory is so flawed, why does it still command attention? Because it speaks to a deep, unaddressed hunger in the modern worldview.
Sheldrake’s theory offers a vision of nature that is participatory, interconnected, and meaningful. It rejects the sterile, disenchanted universe of materialist science in favor of a cosmos infused with memory and habit. It suggests that you are not a machine in a void, but a node in a vast, resonant network of past and future beings.
This is seductive. It aligns with mystical traditions, with Jungian synchronicity, with the intuition that “everything is connected.” Sheldrake is not merely a scientist; he is a philosopher of wonder, and his theory is a narrative for those who have found the standard narrative of science too cold.
The Unspoken Conclusion: The Hypothesis as Mirror
Morphic resonance is almost certainly wrong as a literal description of physical reality. It lacks evidence. It provides no mechanism. It contradicts too much of what we know.
But its persistence is not a failure of the scientific method. It is a diagnostic tool pointing to the limits of that method. The theory forces us to ask uncomfortable questions about the nature of memory, the origin of form, and the possibility of genuine novelty in a universe of fixed laws.
Sheldrake is not a forgotten genius. He is a heretic. And heretics serve a function. They guard the questions that orthodoxy would prefer to ignore.
Is nature a collection of habits, not laws? Almost certainly not. But the question itself is worth keeping alive. Because if the laws are not habits, they are something else—something we may never fully understand.
