The Brain’s Hidden Fuel: Creatine Beyond the Bicep Curl

You know it as the white powder in gym bags, the supplement that adds a few extra reps to your squat, the secret weapon of bodybuilders and sprinters. Creatine has been reduced to this: a tool for muscles, a lever for physical performance.

This reduction is a failure of imagination.

The brain, that three-pound furnace consuming twenty percent of your body’s energy on only two percent of its mass, runs on the same cellular currency as your biceps: adenosine triphosphate, or ATP. And creatine is the master recycler of that currency. It is not merely a muscle supplement. It is, arguably, a cognitive supplement waiting to be recognized.
